SEER Calculator - HVAC Efficiency and Savings Tool

What This Tool Does

The SEER Calculator at seercalc.pro helps homeowners calculate potential energy savings when upgrading their HVAC system. Users input their current SEER rating, desired new SEER rating, AC unit size, annual usage hours, electricity rate, and optional upgrade cost. The calculator then provides:

  • Annual dollar savings
  • Monthly savings breakdown
  • 5-year and 10-year projected savings
  • Payback period (if upgrade cost provided)
  • Return on investment calculations
  • Environmental impact (CO2 reduction)

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your current SEER rating (typically 8-14 for older systems)
  2. Select your desired new SEER rating (14-25 range)
  3. Choose your AC unit size in tons (1.5-5 tons)
  4. Estimate annual cooling hours (500-2500 hours)
  5. Input your electricity rate (check your utility bill)
  6. Optionally add upgrade cost for payback calculation
  7. Click "Calculate My Savings" for instant results

Calculation Methodology

Our calculator uses the industry-standard formula: Annual kWh = (Tonnage × 12,000 BTU × Hours Used) / (SEER Rating × 1,000). We then multiply by your electricity rate to determine annual cost. Savings are calculated by comparing your old system cost to the new system cost.

Typical Savings Examples

Upgrading from 10 SEER to 16 SEER (2.5 ton unit, 1200 hours/year, $0.13/kWh): Saves approximately $487 annually, $2,435 over 5 years, $4,870 over 10 years.

Upgrading from 13 SEER to 18 SEER (3 ton unit, 1800 hours/year, $0.15/kWh): Saves approximately $562 annually, $2,810 over 5 years, $5,620 over 10 years.

SEER Rating Guide

  • 8-10 SEER: Old, inefficient systems (pre-2006)
  • 13-14 SEER: Minimum legal standard (varies by region)
  • 15-16 SEER: Standard efficiency for new systems
  • 17-20 SEER: High efficiency systems
  • 21+ SEER: Premium, maximum efficiency systems
